I just finished reading a news story that reminded me of how important it is to not represent yourself as a police officer or other type of law enforcement official, such as FBI or CIA, when you are a security guard. It can get you in a lot of trouble as evidenced by this about a security guard in Chicago. This security guard had a collection of over 50 federal, state and local law enforcement badges. He got in trouble because he not only possessed these badges, but because he said he was a police officer to get some of the badges. He got these badges online through various shady means. The guard was indicted by a grand jury on charges of false impersonation of a peace officer and unlawful use of identification cards. He said he was only a collector who dreamed of being a cop.
The story claims that security guards are responsible for protecting 95% of the nation’s infrastructure, such as energy and water supplies, malls, banks, hospitals, railways and transportation hubs. I’m not sure if this is true, but it goes to show how important the job of being a security guard is in the United States.
So, remember to always know your legal duties as a security guard and stay away from getting law enforcement badges illegally.
